The Ultimate Paint Shop Pro Pen Tool (Vectoring) Tutorial
Rejoice (or be utterly confused XD) Paint Shop Pro users, I have created the Ultimate Pen Tool Tutorial! *cricket chirps*
Anyway, I'm not sure how many people here actually use Jasc Paint Shop Pro, but I think it's pretty good for vectoring (Illustrator confuses me ). People have asked me how to vector, and I felt that my previous vectoring tutorials were a bit... vague on the actual basics of using the pen tool, not to mention that I've discovered new techniques and shortcuts since my previous tutorials.
So this tutorial goes over the very basics of using the pen tool, and how to create vectors in general, in quite a bit of detail.
The version I use is PSP8, but I think other versions will have similar functions and options. Some parts of the tutorial are very program-specific, while others are more general (but still kinda program-specific)
The zip file (use the download button) is divided up to 3 main sections (excluding the introduction) in 3 big JPG files. It's sort of ordered, but depending on your experience, you can skip some parts. The introduction (intro.jpg) gives an overview of what each section is about, as well as what a vector is (based on deviantART's definition.
========
In case you're wondering, the 3 sections are:
[Vector Tools and Options] Exploring and explaining the tools you need to vector, and when to use them.
[Nodes, Paths, and Editing] More general look at parts of a vector, but also has program-specific explainations on editing options.
[Shortcuts] Various shortcuts I've developed to make vectoring faster and easier. And also a note on converting to JPEG/PNG. Very program-specific.
========
Other tutorials on how I order the layers for anime vectors (ignore the actual pen-tool related parts, they're old and inefficient.. unless you prefer to do it that way >.< ):
You worked it out all by yourself, and you're sharing it, how kind of you. Now, if only you did this earlier, like in January, so that I didn't need to spend ages figuring out the node types editing thing all by myself as well by just fiddling and reading the PSP's help when I was trying to do that Murrue vector.
I put my node-type change thing onto shortcuts too. Such a useful feature! CTRL to add nodes I use a lot too. These, along with many other neat shortcuts, including holding CTRL to dropper an existing colour in Raster mode, are stuff I really love about PSP.
I learned something new as well: I didn't know what the Miter, Round and Bevel joins were before. Thanks. Now I really feel I know everything about vectoring in PSP8. Just raster techniques and layer options I need to learn now. I'll get PSP8 again someday.
HORRAY!! i'm going to this! i use PSP8 so this is awesome. although i don't have the right equipment to use the pentool properly but i do hope to have it in the near future you're a doll!!

eheh I was gonna do it before... but procrastination set in, along with a whole bunch of other picture ideas that got ahead...
Oh yeah, I like that about PSP too. I also like how it keeps a history of your previously used colours and patterns (right click on either the foreground or the background square thingy in the colour palette). Also, I like how while you have the brush/airbrush, you can use both the foreground and background colours by using the left and right mouse buttons, without having to click on the switch button. Photoshop (at least the version I last used) wouldn't let me do that.. and I had to use the eyedropper every time.. I think PSP is actually more user-friendly (at least for me), even though it has less functions in terms of filters and effects.
Actually the types of joins I hardly ever use. Imo it's kinda useless actually, but it's there...

seriously? i'm not a very steady hand using my mouse.. so i thought that a graphics tablet would be better for that thing..guess i'll have to peek a bit more..
oh and you're welcome Yesh i've been using PSP8 for 2 years now..fudging my way through. I got the program off ebay for $25. best money i've spent Its a decent alternative to PS CS2 but from what i've seen no where near the capabilites of that program. but you've gotta make do with what you've got

yeah, I'm wobbly with a mouse too.. and want a tablet T_T ... that's why vectoring's a lot easier than using a brush if you're using a mouse, because you're working with one node at a time, you don't need to do much click and drag, so unsteady hand is okay
I know many people will disagree, but I actually prefer PSP to Photoshop... maybe because Photoshop hates me, but also because I can combine vectors and rasters, and also I think PSP is more user-friendly with a lot of its functions. It just doesn't have as many brushes or filters, and custom-made brushes are harder to find... but I still love PSP (that, and Photoshop is waaay expensive T_T )
Wow thanks for all the great info!! this is awesome. I agree whole heartedly PS is extremely expensive I guess i'll stick with PSP a bit longer then I too think PSP is extremely user friendly take care and thanks again for all the great info!!

Ah, man, if I wasn't at school, I would defniately save this and print it off and thank you until your ears bleed XD
But I'm at school, and won't be home for a few hours.
So... take the opportunity to go buy some ear plugs, sister XD

hmm, what do you mean that you don't have the right equipment? All you need is a mouse and a keyboard...
